United Kingdom, October 18 —Prince Andrew has announced that he will no longer use his royal titles, including Duke of York, following growing criticism over his ties with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
In a statement, Prince Andrew said the decision was made after discussions with King Charles III and other members of the royal family. He also confirmed that he would step down from the Order of the Garter, Britain’s most senior order of chivalry.“With His Majesty’s agreement, I will no longer use my title or honours,” the prince said, adding that he continues to “vigorously deny” the allegations against him.
The move means he will remain a prince by birth but will stop using the title Duke of York, which he received from his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II.
Prince Andrew had already stepped back from public duties in 2019 and was stripped of his HRH title. His decision comes just days before the release of a memoir by Virginia Giuffre, who accused him of sexual abuse when she was 17.Giuffre’s brother welcomed the news, saying it was “a step toward justice” for his late sister.
Royal observers say the decision further isolates Prince Andrew from the royal family, marking another major fall from grace for the once-prominent royal.
