Israel has launched what it described as a “wide-scale” wave of air strikes on targets in western Iran, as the conflict between the two countries intensified and missile exchanges continued into a second week.
The Israeli military said its latest operation targeted military infrastructure in western Iran, though it has not yet released details about the scale of the damage caused.
Iranian authorities have not issued an official assessment of the strikes, but images from the capital Tehran show residents clearing debris from damaged buildings and walking past piles of rubble in several neighbourhoods.
One resident in Tehran told the BBC that continued bombardment could have devastating consequences for the country. “At this pace we will end up with a ruined Iran,” he said.
Meanwhile, Iran launched further missile attacks towards Israel. Fires were reported on the outskirts of Tel Aviv following one of the strikes, according to BBC correspondent Jon Donnison, who was at the scene.
The renewed exchange of attacks comes amid uncertainty over whether diplomatic efforts could bring the fighting to an end.
US President Donald Trump said Iran had signalled interest in negotiating a deal to stop the war, but insisted that Washington was not yet ready to accept the proposed terms.
“Iran wants to make a deal,” he said, “but the terms are not good enough.”
Analysts say Iran was never expected to match the military capabilities of the United States and its allies directly. Instead, the conflict is increasingly seen as a question of strategic endurance and political survival for Tehran.
As strikes continue across the region, concerns are growing that further escalation could draw in additional regional powers and deepen instability across the Middle East.
