United Kingdom—King Charles III has said he is able to “share some good news” about his health, announcing that his cancer treatment will be reduced in the new year following a strong response to medical care.
In a recorded message broadcast on Channel 4 during the Stand Up To Cancer fundraising programme, the King said early diagnosis and effective intervention had made it possible for doctors to scale back the intensity of his treatment. He described the progress as “both a personal blessing and a testament to the remarkable advances in cancer care”.
Buckingham Palace confirmed that the 77-year-old monarch has “responded exceptionally well” to treatment and is now entering a precautionary phase, with significantly reduced treatment schedules. However, palace sources stressed that the King is not considered to be in remission and will continue to be monitored.
The message marks the most substantial update on the King’s condition since he publicly disclosed his cancer diagnosis in February 2024. The specific type of cancer has not been identified.
Using the platform to encourage public awareness, the King highlighted the importance of early detection, urging people to take part in national screening programmes. “Early diagnosis quite simply saves lives,” he said, warning that millions of missed screenings represented lost opportunities to treat cancer at its earliest stages.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer welcomed the update, calling it a “powerful message” and saying he was pleased the King’s treatment would be reduced.
Despite his illness, King Charles has continued to carry out a demanding programme of public duties, including overseas engagements and state visits. Royal aides say he has been determined not to be defined by his diagnosis.
The Stand Up To Cancer campaign, run in partnership with Cancer Research UK, has raised more than £113m since 2012 and continues to fund dozens of clinical trials across the UK.
