United Kingdom-Police have named the two men killed in Tuesday’s attack on a synagogue in Manchester as 53-year-old Adrian Daulby and 66-year-old Melvin Cravitz.
Three others remain in hospital with serious injuries after a man drove a car into members of the public before stabbing people outside the Heaton Park synagogue, where worshippers had gathered for Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed the attacker – shot dead at the scene – as 35-year-old Jihad Al-Shamie, a British citizen of Syrian descent. Three other people have been arrested as part of the investigation.
The UK’s Chief Rabbi said the incident was the “tragic result” of an “unrelenting wave of Jew hatred”. Prime Minister Keir Starmer told the Jewish community he would do “everything in his power” to ensure they had “the security you deserve”.
Neighbours of Al-Shamie expressed shock, with one telling the BBC: “To have somebody like that living on my estate, it’s scary.”
A police cordon remains in place in Prestwich, with access restricted to several homes. Greater Manchester Police said the scene was linked to Thursday’s arrests.
Journalists and photographers are gathered near the cordon, though the street remains quiet.
