Great Britain-US President Donald Trump’s state visit to the UK this week is set to be marked by controversy, despite extensive preparations by officials on both sides. The two-day trip – only the second such honour for a non-royal – will combine pageantry at Windsor Castle with simmering political tensions and protests.
Trump’s first visit in 2019 drew widespread demonstrations and diplomatic unease after he publicly criticised London Mayor Sadiq Khan, backed Boris Johnson in the Conservative leadership race, and suggested the NHS be included in trade talks. A petition against his presence attracted over a million signatures, while the “Trump Baby” blimp became an enduring symbol of opposition.
This time, officials have placed huge emphasis on logistics and ceremony, with Windsor transformed into what locals now call “Trumpton”. Around 1,300 troops and 120 horses will take part in parades, alongside a Red Arrows flypast. The state banquet at St George’s Hall has been carefully choreographed, with King Charles III’s speech rewritten multiple times to strike the right tone.
Whitehall insiders admit the visit is about “the optics” rather than substance, with no Downing Street meeting or parliamentary address planned. But former diplomats say the decision to extend Britain’s highest ceremonial honour to Trump underlines the strategic importance London still attaches to its relationship with Washington.
Despite potential flashpoints, officials remain hopeful the event will proceed smoothly. Palace aides recall Trump and his family as “warm and solicitous guests” in 2019, determined to avoid missteps. This week’s visit, they say, will be watched not just in Britain but around the world.
