China has unveiled a new generation of advanced weaponry — including laser systems, nuclear-capable ballistic missiles, and giant underwater drones — during a vast military parade in Beijing marking 80 years since its victory over Japan in the Second World War.
President Xi Jinping presided over the spectacle, declaring that China was “unstoppable” and would “never be intimidated” by external pressures. The event was attended by 26 world leaders, most notably Russia’s Vladimir Putin and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, marking the first public appearance of the three leaders together.
The presence of Kim, who has long been viewed as diplomatically isolated, was particularly striking. His prominent position at the parade was seen as a symbolic gesture of Beijing’s support for Pyongyang.
Beyond its commemorative tone, analysts say the parade offered an insight into Beijing’s strategic intentions, particularly regarding Taiwan — a self-governing island that China claims as its own. The display of military technology was interpreted as a message to both regional rivals and Western powers.
Meanwhile, former US president Donald Trump, commenting from afar, took to social media to issue a scathing rebuke. “Please give my warmest regards to Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un as you conspire against the United States of America,” he wrote.
