Trump vows US backing for Ukraine security in push for peace deal

US President Donald Trump has pledged that Washington will help guarantee Ukraine’s security as part of any eventual peace agreement with Russia, following high-level talks at the White House with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders.

Trump described the discussions as “very good”, while Zelensky hailed them as the “best so far”, calling the US commitment a “strong signal” of support.

The summit followed Trump’s recent meeting in Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin, after which he said he had spoken to European allies about potential security guarantees for Ukraine. These, he suggested, could range from military presence to intelligence-sharing, though the scope remains uncertain. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer told the BBC negotiations on the details would continue on Tuesday.

Analysts note that “security guarantees” could involve anything from deploying troops to enhancing defence cooperation. The possibility is viewed as pivotal for Kyiv as it continues to face unrelenting Russian attacks.

Hours after the Washington talks concluded, Russia launched fresh strikes on Ukrainian cities, triggering widespread power outages—a stark reminder of the daily reality endured by millions.Zelensky has stressed that a ceasefire must be in place before any peace deal is signed, a position shared by many Ukrainians directly affected by the war.

While the shape of a settlement remains unclear, the White House talks have bolstered hopes in Kyiv that international backing for Ukraine’s security is firming, even as the human cost of Russia’s invasion continues to rise.
