Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri is set to visit Nepal to officially invite Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli for an upcoming diplomatic visit to India, according to sources from Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Secretary Misri is expected to arrive in Kathmandu on 18 August (1st Bhadra), where he will meet with top political leaders, including Prime Minister Oli and Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Arzu Rana Deuba. His visit is seen as part of the ongoing diplomatic engagement aimed at enhancing bilateral ties between Nepal and India.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that the visit is being arranged specifically to deliver an invitation for Prime Minister Oli to visit New Delhi. Although the date of Oli’s visit has not yet been officially announced, the ministry confirmed that discussions are underway and the visit has already been agreed in principle.Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lok Bahadur Kshetri noted that while Misri’s visit is confirmed, further details, including his exact arrival schedule, will be communicated later. “The Prime Minister’s visit to India has been confirmed. The date is yet to be announced, and the visit by Secretary Misri is part of that process,” Kshetri stated.
This will be Misri’s second official visit to Nepal since being appointed Foreign Secretary in July 2024. His previous visit, exactly a year ago, was termed an introductory tour. At that time, he also met Prime Minister Oli, although the visit concluded without a formal invitation being extended.During that previous diplomatic interaction, Prime Minister Oli had, in turn, sent a message to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inviting him to visit Nepal.
This time, however, Secretary Misri is expected to carry an official message from Prime Minister Modi, inviting Prime Minister Oli to visit India in the near future — a gesture seen as a reaffirmation of the growing warmth in India-Nepal relations.
