United Kingdom—A musician and visual artist has been appointed the Manx Wildlife Trust’s new Biosphere Artist in Residence, a role designed to deepen public engagement with the Isle of Man’s natural heritage.
Alice Dudley, the fourth artist to take up the annual residency, said she intends to focus on the “intersection between culture and nature”, drawing on the island’s rich folklore traditions and distinctive landscapes.
She plans to deliver a programme of outdoor workshops encompassing visual art, music, poetry and creative writing, aimed at encouraging communities to explore their environment through creative expression.
Describing the appointment as a “natural next step”, Ms Dudley said she hoped to develop both her own connection with the Manx countryside and that of the wider public. “I’ve been inspired by our language, our stories and our sense of place,” she said. “This residency brings together folklore, identity and the ways nature shapes our daily lives.”
A key output of her tenure will be a concept album inspired by Manx folklore and wildlife. She also plans to create a collaborative book in which artists respond to each other’s paintings, poems, lyrics and stories.
The residency, established in partnership with Biosphere Isle of Man and funded by the Isle of Man Arts Council, supports artists whose work reflects and promotes the island’s environmental and cultural identity.
Ms Dudley succeeds sound therapist Amy Howse and will hold the post until October 2026.
