United Kingdom-The Priminister of United Kingdom,Sir Keir Starmer has launched a direct attack on Nigel Farage, accusing the Reform UK leader of promoting “politics of grievance” and lacking faith in Britain.
Addressing the Labour Party conference in Liverpool, the prime minister contrasted what he described as his vision of a “tolerant, decent, respectful Britain” with Farage’s approach, which he said was designed to sow division.
Starmer, under pressure with Labour trailing Reform in the polls and his personal approval ratings at record lows, used the speech to set out his values and background. He spoke of his working-class roots and a programme of “national renewal”.
But he reserved his strongest criticism for Farage, who he described as Labour’s biggest threat at the next election. “When was the last time you heard Nigel Farage say anything positive about Britain’s future?” he asked. “He can’t. He doesn’t like Britain, doesn’t believe in Britain.”
The prime minister also pushed back on claims that the country was “broken”, pointing to investment in high-tech industries and community volunteering.
Although he did not repeat his earlier remark that Farage’s immigration policies were “racist”, Starmer pledged to challenge racist rhetoric “with everything we have”.
“Free speech is a British value,” he said. “But if you incite racist violence and hatred, that’s not expressing concern – it’s criminal.”
