Kathmandu, Nepal – Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has resigned from his post, citing the need for a constitutional resolution to ongoing political unrest. The move comes after widespread public protests, including the Jen-Ji movement, which had increasingly challenged government authority.
Oli submitted his resignation to President Ram Chandra Poudel on Tuesday, stating that the decision was aimed at facilitating political settlement and addressing the country’s pressing governance issues. He had been serving as prime minister since 30 Ashad 2081 (Nepali calendar).
In his resignation letter, Oli said:
“Having been appointed Prime Minister on 31 Ashad 2081 under Article 76 (2) of the Constitution of Nepal, and considering the extraordinary circumstances currently facing the nation, I hereby resign from the office of Prime Minister with immediate effect under Article 77 (1)(k) to allow further steps for a constitutional political settlement and resolution of the issues.”
Political analysts suggest that Oli’s resignation may open the door for new political alliances and provide an opportunity to stabilise Nepal’s fractious political landscape. The decision underscores the growing influence of grassroots movements in shaping national politics and reflects the ongoing challenges of governance in the country.
