Trump Pledges Firm Approach Ahead of Alaska Talks with Putin on Ukraine

US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are preparing for a high-stakes summit in Anchorage, Alaska, aimed at exploring potential ways to ease the ongoing war in Ukraine. The face-to-face meeting will be the first between the two leaders in six years.

Speaking ahead of the summit, Trump said he would quickly know whether any agreement could be reached, asserting that Putin “won’t mess around with me.” The discussion will be limited to a private session, joined only by their translators, and will not cover a final peace settlement, which Trump has previously suggested could involve territorial compromises—a proposal strongly rejected by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Zelensky has voiced strong opposition to any decisions made in his absence, warning that agreements excluding Kyiv would be “meaningless” and could undermine the prospects for lasting peace.

The White House has downplayed expectations for the Alaska meeting, framing it as a listening exercise rather than a negotiation aimed at achieving immediate breakthroughs. Despite this, both leaders will assess whether common ground can be found to reduce hostilities in Ukraine, where tens of thousands of soldiers on both sides have been lost since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022.

The choice of Alaska carries symbolic significance: the state was once Russian territory before being sold to the United States in 1867, and became the 49th American state in 1959. Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov described the location as “logical,” given its proximity to Russia across the Bering Strait.

Trump’s role as a potential global peacemaker contrasts with Putin’s consistent objective of securing Ukrainian territory, highlighting the complex dynamics that will shape the summit. Analysts note that the meeting may also set the tone for future diplomatic efforts, even as European allies and Ukraine insist that Kyiv must be central to any peace negotiations.
